The U.S. Men’s National team is in need of some precious points if it wishes to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. “We need two wins,” said U.S. captain Carlos Bocanegra on Friday, a day before the team takes on El Salvador in Sandy, Utah. “That would set us up nicely for qualifying.”
As it stands, the U.S. trails Costa Rica by two points and is tied with Honduras for second place in the North and Central American qualifying group with 10 points apiece. Mexico is in fourth place with nine points. A win on Saturday would net the Americans three points, catapulting the team into a tight first place lead.
Since only the top three teams are guaranteed an advance, the Yanks will certainly need the win.
