Concerns that South Africa wouldn’t be ready for the 2010 World Cup seem unfounded now. According to a British NBC affiliate, “South Africans are better prepared at this stage than any previous [World Cup] host.” This includes full completion of all stadiums, new airports and roads, and improved public transportation, 10 months before the nation is scheduled to host the event.
The news comes after Greece was heavily criticized in 2004 for its delays in Olympic construction. Ultimately the country pulled off a modern day miracle in the last hour to christen the facilities. In any event, kudos are in order for South Africa’s World Cup organizers. Now all we have to worry about is qualifying.
